Out of gauge shipments
The minimum ground clearance required is 30cm. Due to ramp restrictions the maximum accepted dimensions are:
Length 30 X Width 4.2m, Height 4.3m with a maximum tonnage of 80 ton.
Vehicles that require special handling for loading, including low loaders and flat beds with low ground clearance, should contact the freight booking team in Hoek van Holland in advance. Stena Line will not accept any responsibility for non-shipment of abnormal loads without having received prior notice.

Bloodstock and Livestock
Accepted exclusively on our Hoek van Holland vessels, Stena Line can accept the following animals for shipment:

- Insects
- Equidae

Pets
The freight department does not accept pets on any of its North Sea routes. Pets are only accepted for shipment between Hoek van Holland and Harwich and can be booked via our Travel department.
Customers are requested to adhere to below guidelines.
- When transporting dangerous goods on Stena Line vessels on the North Sea routes (Netherlands – United Kingdom), the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code (IMDG code) applies.
- The units must comply with IMO’s “Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing”.
- Although important for all units, for units carrying dangerous cargo it is especially important that all trailers and road vehicles have lashing points designed for securing to the ship.
In order for Stena Line to adhere to the IMDG code, we require the following from customers booking on Stena Line’s Freight routes on the North Sea:
- Bookings of dangerous goods units on the North Sea routes must reach us no later than 5 hours before departure and prior to the unit arriving at our check-in, Monday through Friday. Notable exceptions are class 1 and class 7:
Class 1: 24 hours before departure
Class 7: 48 hours before departure
Bookings for all North Sea routes for shipment on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays must reach us by Friday, or the last business day before a holiday, by 17:00hrs CET.
- A Dangerous Goods Declaration and Container / Vehicle packing Certificate must be properly filled in and sent via email to the freight booking department at the time of booking. You can submit your documentation to: [email protected]
- Delivery of the unit to the appointed quay must be done within the below timeframe:
- Hoek van Holland – Harwich v.v.: 2 hours before departure.
- Hoek van Holland – Immingham v.v.: 2 hours before departure, except dangerous goods with Flashpoint <23°C & Stowage category B + C, latest check in 3 hours before departure.
- Europoort routes: 2 hours before departure.
- The original Dangerous Goods Declaration and Container / Vehicle Packing Certificate must be presented to the check-in when the unit is delivered.
- The unit must be properly labeled in accordance with the IMDG code before delivery to the appointed quay.
Shipment of units with improper or missing documents may be refused, and are also subject to port approval, environmental permits and documents of compliance of our vessels.

Units requiring temperature control during the voyage
Any vehicle requiring temperature control during the voyage – must be pre-advised with the required temperature (in Degrees Celsius) indicated on booking instructions.
