In collaboration with the Latvian Railways (LDz) we are launching the intermodal rail solution ‘Green Switch’ in connection with our ferry routes from Ventspils to Nynäshamn and Liepāja to Travemünde.
Each year, trucking companies transport almost 60 million tons of freight on the Latvian roads. During the last five years the volume of freight transported on Latvian roads has increased by a quarter or more than 25%.
In addition to our quay to quay transportation service and in line with our strategy to offer sustainable intermodal rail solutions the ‘Green Switch’ service offers all freight carriers to switch their freight to be transported from Riga in a semitrailer on a railway wagon and have it delivered to the designated port terminal in Liepāja or Ventspils and loaded onto one of our ferries to be transported to Germany or the Scandinavian countries.
We are convinced that contrailer transportation is the future of the transport industry; Europe is facing the challenge of exhaust gas from trucks on public roads, therefore it make sense to launch contrailer transport in intermodal traffic in the Baltics. It is important to note that the rail to port linkage is working impeccably, and in the future it should become one of the most accurate ways of delivering goods in terms of time and sustainability.
