The United Nations is on a mission to create a more sustainable future for everyone. At the 2021 Climate Change Conference, COP26 a decision was made that has started a global movement against climate change. This decision spurred the European Union to act. With the goal of cutting carbon emissions to zero by the year 2050, actions are needed. However, shipping and travelling will most probably not stop and we therefore need new solutions that move us closer to the goal. The ETS is the first initiative by a governmental authority to increase investments for reducing environmental impact. For the shipping sector, ETS surcharges was implemented starting January 2024.
