Our objective is to achieve a 30% carbon emissions reduction by the year 2030. To achieve this objective, we will combine energy-efficient improvements with the utilisation of low-greenhouse gas fuels. Furthermore, we encourage our freight customers to actively participate by voluntarily contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in freight transports with our insetting initiative.
Carbon insetting focuses on creating initiatives that reduces emissions throughout our own supply chains and operations. The initiatives can vary from transitioning to renewable fuel alternatives, collaborating with suppliers and stakeholders to improve their energy efficiency or contributing to other key areas of emission reduction.
The insetting initiative offers an option to affect decarbonisation across an entire supply chain where companies can control their offers and collaborate with stakeholders in the chain to decrease emissions collectively.
The offsetting initiative on the other hand provides the option to reduce emissions through external projects or initiatives that are not directly related to a company’s business. An example is the promise to plant trees to compensate the carbon emissions on a service being used.
As we at Stena Line are committed to recusing our greenhouse gas emissions, the insetting initiative gives an opportunity to influence services our customers are using themselves, or operations throughout our network.
The book-and-claim principle creates a simple system designed to facilitate the decarbonisation of shipping.
The term “scope emissions” refers to standardised categories of a company’s greenhouse gas emissions. Understanding scope emissions is crucial for calculating an organisation’s carbon footprint and gaining insights into how to minimise contributions to climate change.
Notably, Scope 3 emissions are believed to have the most significant impact among the three categories. By offering insetting solutions, we assist customers in reducing their Scope 3 emissions.

By participating in our initiative, customers can contribute to reducing emissions while maintaining their operational continuity. Customers can claim insets from our consumption of certified biofuel or other low-greenhouse gas fuel on ships within our operations which directly corresponds to the avoided greenhouse gas emissions.
You, as our freight customer, are assured accurate and distinct insets. The emissions reduction procedure is thoroughly documented and finalised with a corresponding certificate and statement, regardless of which insetting scope you choose to participate in.
The certificate serves as assurance that the emissions reductions are both genuine and distinctive. When reductions occur using biofuel on ships our process undergoes independent review by an external auditor as guarantee for the customer.

Scope 3 emissions encompass the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that are indirectly linked to a company’s operations. These emissions are typically more difficult to manage due to their indirect association. However, with our assistance, achieving this reduction is feasible.

GHG Inset Price Determination: When your company expresses interest in Scope 3 reductions, we calculate the GHG inset price for your company, promote transparency and a clear understanding of the process.
Cost Estimation and Procurement: Following the GHG inset price determination, we calculate a cost estimate. Should you choose to move forward, the GHG inset can be procured accordingly.
Sustainability Documentation: After procurement, we provide a GHG statement specifically for your company’s sustainability records, reflecting the GHG inset’s influence on your emission statistics.
Registration and Verification: We meticulously document all GHG claims in our registry, guaranteeing precise monitoring and validation of emission reductions.

The direct solution is linked to a particular route and potentially to a specific ship carrying the customer’s freight, although it may not coincide with the precise journey of their shipment.
This method guarantees the accurate tracking of greenhouse gas offsets to the exact fuel consumption of a ship on a designated route.

The indirect solution offers the customer to finance and claim emissions savings under specific fleet limitations.
However, the connection to a particular route or ship is not direct and the low-greenhouse gas fuel may be utilised across our entire network, without being restricted to the customer’s freight route or the ship used for transportation.
